JOB TITLE: LIBRARY ASSISTANT III (LA3) - ADULT LITERACY DEPARTMENT

Hours of Work: This position includes daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. The position will begin as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
Wage Range: $28-$31.11 per hour, plus 9% in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays.

Red Deer Public Library invites applications for an LA3 - Adult Literacy position who can assist with the influx of Ukrainian learners. This 2-year temporary part-time position will average 20 hours per week.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Under the supervision and direction of the Adult Literacy Manager, the Library Assistant III (LA 3) - Adult Literacy, provides support for Adult Literacy Program learners (focus on new arrivals from Ukraine), tutors and the general public as needed and assists in the development, delivery, and promotion of the Adult Literacy programs, services and collections.

DUTIES 

  1. Plans, delivers, promotes, and evaluates Ukrainian adult literacy classes as well as general programs, special events, tutor trainings, and activities that promote adult literacy, including community outreach.
  2. Collects, organizes, and accurately manages data required by Alberta Government. Keeps track of Ukrainian registrations and participants. 
  3. May assist in the maintenance and selection of adult literacy collections.
  4. Answers client questions, primarily assists Ukrainian registrants in the Adult Literacy Program, coordinates the matching of volunteers and learners, assists tutor-learner pairs in their learning plans and needs, checks volunteer references,  assists in creating and distributing program newsletters and information.
  5. In consultation with the department manager, may oversee the day-to-day operation of the department.
  6. Provides support to co-workers to resolve volunteer or learner concerns or complaints, procedural questions, equipment issues, etc., and forwards unresolved issues to the manager.
  7. Assists with orientation and on-the-job training of staff. 
  8. Assists the department manager with long range planning.
  9. May represent the Department or Red Deer Public Library on various committees.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. In-depth knowledge of organization policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge and use of the latest technology that applies to Adult Literacy program participants.
  3. Awareness of current events and trends as they relate to library services.

QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Fluent in Ukrainian and English.
  2. A degree/diploma in Adult Education, Adult Literacy, or Language Training from a recognized (accredited) institution is preferred. However, a combination of education and experience might be considered for an ideal candidate.  
  3. Excellent computer skills in a networked Windows environment including Office, Google Apps and web-based services, with expertise in Excel spreadsheets and exceptional attention to detail. 
  4. A thorough understanding of the settlement process and issues that Ukrainian evacuees face during their integration process.
  5. Excellent problem solving, planning, and communication skills (oral and written).
  6. Exceptional customer service skills. 
  7. Ability to relate to co-workers/program participants in a courteous, helpful manner.
  8. Self-directed. Able to work either independently or as part of a team.
  9. Group facilitation skills.
  10. A current, acceptable, Vulnerable Sector Check is required. Cost of the check is the responsibility of the applicant and would be required if acceptance of an offer of employment is made.
  11. A valid Alberta Driver’s License. Successful candidates will occasionally be required to drive or arrange alternative transport between library locations during a work shift.
  12. Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination (currently two doses, but booster recommended) is a condition of employment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical requirements of the Library Assistant position include frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and bending; lifting library materials up to 25 kgs; reaching to place materials on shelves; and pushing and pulling book carts up to 45kg.
